Graphic of a candidate Higgs boson decay event detected at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) in May 2018. This event, thought to be a Higgs boson decaying to two tau leptons (blue cones), was recorded with the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) detector. In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson is used to explain why particles have mass. CERN announced the Higgs boson discovery on 4 July 2012.
