Thailand: A man lifts his Chinese mask in a procession through the streets of Phuket Town, Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Nine Emperor Gods Festival). The Vegetarian Festival is a religious festival held annually on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand. It attracts spectators because of some of the unusual religious rituals performed. Many devotees will slash themselves with swords, pierce their cheeks with sharp objects and commit other painful acts. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar.
