Illustration of the Charge of the Light Brigade, Balaklava, 25 October 1854. This was military action undertaken by the British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War (1854-1856). Lord Cardigan (commander of the Light Brigade) is depicted leading the charge of the light cavalry towards Russian artillery on the left. In the foreground, Russian artillery fires on the left flank of the charging brigade. In the background, artillery on the hills fire on the right flank. Russian cavalry can also be seen on the left, waiting in readiness to engage the British. The order for the cavalry charge was affected by misinformation and miscommunication which proved disastrous for the Light Brigade. The charge is remembered for both its bravery and tragedy. Illustration by William Simpson from 'The Seat of War in the East'. Published by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co in 1855.
