Mustang horses standing in a fighting stance, the White Sands herd from the missile range in Utah. They have a rare gaited gene. This Catnip herd were bred for the US Calvary in the 1800s. They are mostly palomino and paints. They were rescued by Karen Sussman and the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros, the organization that Wild Horse Annie started when lobbying congress in the '70s to save mustangs and burros. Gila Herd were rescued off land in Arizona. They are bay colored with a dark mane and shorter broom tail. They other distinctive markings are small stripes on the lower legs and a dark dorsal stripe. The original 31 horses were gathered in 1999 the BLM. Local ranchers recall the horses hiding in the Salt Cedar in 1904. They have been tested genetically and are remnants of the horses from the Spanish conquistadors; Lantry, South Dakota, United States of America
