This domestic waste bin typically contains single-use plastic packaging of supermarket foodstuffs such as fresh fruit and vegetables. It could also be containing other single-use plastics such as bowls from shelf-ready, pre-packaged food items, plates and trays etc. Only a small percentage of these items are recyclable. Though the scourge of plastics pollution is damaging the oceans, the environment and wildlife, too many people are indifferent, inconsiderate, or ignorant of it. The new packaging waste legislation, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), is being adopted worldwide - for instance in the UK, India, Japan, USA, Canada and Australia. The EPR legislation requires the producers (not the consumer) of packaging to be responsible for the costs and environmental impacts of their products. However, to many there is some lack of clarity.
