Illustration of Austro-Hungarian officers and explorers during the Austro-Hungarian Polar expedition from 1872-1874. The expedition set out to find the Northeast Passage, a sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They were unsuccessful in finding the Northeast Passage, but did discover the islands that they named Franz Josef Land after the Austo-Hungarian Emporer. Illustration published in 1879.
