Japan: Akechi Mitsuhide (10 March 1528 - 2 July 1582), samurai and betrayer of Oda Nobunaga. Hanging scroll painting, c. 1613. Akechi Mitsuhide, nicknamed Jubei or called Koreto Hyuga no Kami from his clan name and title, was a samurai who lived during the Sengoku period of Feudal Japan. Mitsuhide was a general under daimyo Oda Nobunaga, although he became infamous for his betrayal in 1582, which led to Nobunaga's seppuku at Honno-ji. He attempted to establish himself as shogun, but was swiftly defeated by Nobunaga's successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi and killed by bandits while fleeing.
