The volunteers were formed in a line of battalions, in contiguous columns at quarter distance, varying from 400 to 950 strong; four battalions forming a brigade, with the exception of the Artillery, which consisted of two battalions only. The whole mass or line was formed into two grand divisions, the first being the largest, embracing, in addition to four battalions (the strength of the second division), the Artillery Brigade, and the single battalion on the extreme right, composed of Mounted Rifles, the Hon. Artillery Company, Engineers, and Artists..."Quick march" being given, they moved forward, and when the last man of the front rank of each battalion had reached the first flagstaff...the order "Front, turn," was given, when they moved forward at quarter-distance column, at right angles to the original line, in the direction of the second flag...on reaching which the orders were, "The column will wheel to the left," "Left wheel, double," and round went the column in "double-quick" time, when square "Forward, quick," brought them parallel to the original time, marching in quick time, still at "quarter distance."
