Cape Race, Newfoundland, the termination of the American system of telegraphs, 1861. The most important event of the week has been the completion of the great continental telegraph line, uniting San Francisco with New York, and so with Cape Race, Newfoundland - a connected line of 6000 miles, and the longest in the world. It was finished on the 25th October, and a message exchanged between the Mayors of San Francisco and New York. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
