Bioluminescent (glowing) plankton with the Crux constellation (above vegetation at left) in the background, Soneva Fushi island, Maldives. The bioluminescence is caused by a chemical reaction between a compound called luciferin and oxygen. This reaction occurs when the plankton are disturbed, with excess energy released as light. Photographed on the 14th of February, 2023.
