Volunteer Drill-shed at Birkenhead for the 1st Cheshire Volunteer Engineers, 1862. The idea of the building is taken from a shed designed by Captain Fowke, R.E. (the designer of the new Exhibition building of 1862)...The length of the building is 200 feet, the breadth 52 feet, and height 28 feet 6 inches. When lighted up the interior of the building has a very fine effect - upwards of 200 gas jets throwing a strong and effective light throughout. An orchestra capable of accommodating 150 performers has been erected and the acoustic principles are admirable. The cost of the shed will be about ?500. The house in front will be appropriated for storerooms, an armoury, and classrooms. Messrs. J. and W. Walker were the contractors. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
