Faye's comet (centre-left, white tail), or comet 4P, photographed on 9 January 2022. Comets are collections of dust and ice that orbit the Sun. As they near the Sun and are warmed they release gas (outgassing) that forms the tail. This comet, first discovered by Herve Faye in 1843, orbits the sun every 2,700 days. It is classed as a Jupiter family comet, meaning its trajectory is largely determined by Jupiter's gravitational effects. As its name implies, it was just the fourth periodic comet to have its orbit computed.
