Illustration of the British-America geneticist Oliver Smithies (1925-2017). Smithies pioneered gene targeting in mice, a process for replacing a single gene, to determine its function. These knockout mice have been widely used as models of human diseases. Smithies was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Mario Capecchi and Martin Evans for his work on gene targeting.
