Scientists collecting samples of runoff water from a field which has been trialling manure injection. Manure injection is a method of fertilising fields that involves inserting manure directly into the soil rather than spreading it over the surface. It is hoped that this could reduce ammonia emissions and runoff into natural ecosystems. These are both environmental issues that occur when fertiliser is applied to ground surfaces.
