Illustration of the Swiss biophysicist Jacques Dubochet, (born 1942). Dubochet is best known for his work in cryo-electron microscopy. He developed a way of rapidly cooling biological samples for electron microscopy so that water molecules froze before they could crystallise. This process, known as vitrification, allowed the study of fine structural details without any distortion. Dubochet was awarded a share of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson, for his work on vitrification.
