Composite image of 115 potential rogue planets (circled in red) that were discovered in 2021 in a region of the sky occupied by Upper Scorpius and Ophiucus. Rogue planets, also known as free-floating planets (FFPs), have masses comparable to those of the planets in our Solar System, but do not orbit a star and instead roam freely on their own. They may have formed in the protoplanetary disc around a star before being ejected from its orbit, or condensed in the same way that leads to the formation of stars, but without the required mass to form a star. There could be billions of rogue planets in the Milky Way. Composite image of observations from the Very Large Telescope (VLT), Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope.
