Stained light micrograph of a tissue specimen taken from a skin growth on a patient with the fungal condition eumycetoma. Affected cells are shown in red. This is a condition usually only seen in dry, equatorial regions where access to healthcare is poor. It is caused by repeated exposure of broken skin to soil or water containing certain fungal species. This disease causes painless growths under the skin. If left untreated, these growths can develop leading to limb deformation and degradation of underlying tissues and bone. Treatment involves antifungal medicine, with surgical removal of affected tissue may be required in some cases.
