At centre is the star cluster NGC 346, where hot young stars are producing radiation and stellar winds that are sculpting and impacting the surrounding gas and dust, causing it to glow (pink colour). The visible ridge-like structure of dark nebulae (across top) are dust globules where new stars may be forming. The N66 starbirth region is 210,000 light years from Earth, in the Small Magellanic Cloud, in the constellation Tucana. This image was obtained in July 2004 with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument.
