The Mon language is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Mon, who live in Burma and Thailand. Mon, like the related language Cambodian?ut unlike most languages in Mainland Southeast Asia?s not tonal. Mon is spoken by less than a million people today.

Lamphun was the capital of the small but culturally rich Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai from about 750 CE to the time of its conquest by King Mangrai (the founder of Chiang Mai) in 1281.
