Tooth anatomy, illustration. At the centre of the tooth is the pulp. This is the living part of the tooth that contains the blood vessels and nerves. Surrounding it is dentine, a mineralised connective tissue with a similar composition to bone. The outer layer of the crown (the visible part of the tooth) is enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The roots of the teeth anchor it in the jaw bone.
