Illustration of an abnormal red blood cell (erythrocyte) known as a bite cell, or degmacyte. These abnormal red blood cells have one or more semicircular excisions in their membranes. These 'bites' are the result of denatured haemoglobin being removed from the cells as they travel through the spleen. The denaturing occurs as a result of oxidative stress, which can be due to certain medications or diseases such as G6PD deficiency and other inherited enzymopathies.
