W50 supernova remnant, radio image. Also known as the Manatee Nebula, this structure is formed by jets from the black hole that formed following supernova SS 433 (the system is thought to be an eclipsing X-ray binary system that includes a black hole). These jets create a swirling pattern to the radio waves imaged here by the Very Large Array (VLA). The strongest signals are in red at centre, with the emissions weakening with distance from the centre. This supernova remnant is around 18,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquila.
