Prehistoric chalicotherid mammal (Chalicotherium grande). Computer illustration of chalicotherid mammal in a forest during the Miocene epoch (around 23 to 5 million years ago), in what is now Europe. This ungulate lived from around 28 to 4 million years ago, during the Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene epochs. It was herbivorous, and is thought to have walked on the knuckles of its forelimbs. In these respects, it was like ground sloths, gorillas and giant pandas. Its fossils are found in Europe, Africa and Asia.
