Hurricane Dorian off the US coast with city lights, infrared satellite image. Here, the hurricane is impacting the coastline of the south-eastern USA (Georgia, and South and North Carolina), with high winds causing damage and storms reaching as far inland as the major cities of Atlanta (centre left) and Washington DC (top right). Earlier, Hurricane Dorian reached category 5 strength on 1 September 2019, making landfall in the Bahamas where it caused extensive damage, deaths and flooding due to high winds, prolonged rainfall and storm surges. This image was obtained at 03:42 local time on 5 September 2019, by the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite.
