Apollo 11 landing site, Lunar Orbiter image, 1960s. There were five Lunar Orbiter spacecraft, launched from August 1966 to August 1967. The images from the Lunar Orbiter spacecraft were used by NASA to select the Apollo landing sites on the Moon. This image shows the landing site in the Sea of Tranquility selected for Apollo 11, the first mission to land humans on the Moon. Neil Armstrong landed the lunar module 'Eagle' at 20:18 UTC on 20 July 1969, to the west of the intended landing spot, at what became known as Tranquility Base.
