HERACLES robotic sample return lunar mission approaching the Moon, illustration. HERACLES (Human-Enhanced Robotic Architecture and Capability for Lunar Exploration and Science) is a robotic sample return mission spacecraft. Planned by ESA with the Canadian and Japanese space agencies, this mission will use the proposed Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway space station as a staging post. HERACLES will survey areas of the lunar surface in preparation for future crewed missions to the Moon.
