Fraudulent cigarette advertising, 1950s. This product, named 'Trim', offered a double-your-money-back guarantee that smoking at least three cigarettes a day would help people lose weight without modifying their diet. Trim was manufactured by the Cornell Drug Corporation, who claimed that their patented formula of flavored tobacco treated with tartaric acid was a medically approved method of decreasing appetite. In 1958, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized supplies of Trim Reducing-Aid cigarettes on the grounds that they were misbranded. The product was banned following legal action by the FDA.
