Alfred Charles Bernard Lovell (1913-2012), British astronomer and physicist. Lovell founded the Jodrell Bank Observatory in 1945, in Cheshire, UK, to house his 76-metre Mark 1A telescope (the Lovell Telescope, built from 1957). The Mark 1, the world's first giant dish radio telescope, was later extended as the Mark 1A. Lovell was Director at Jodrell until 1980. Originally a physicist, Lovell worked on cosmic ray studies before World War II, when he helped to develop radar. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1995, awarded the OBE in 1946, and knighted in 1961.
