Rachel Carson (1907-1964), US marine biologist and author. Carson is best known for her book 'Silent Spring' (1962), shown here, which documented her concerns over the use of synthetic pesticides, including DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). The book lead to the ban in the US of DDT and to the founding of the grassroots environmental movement.
