Tumbiana stromatolite placed next to a US penny for scale. This stromatolite was formed approximately 2.7 billion years ago in the Tumbiana Formation, Western Australia. Stromatolites are formed from layered deposits of limestone trapped by blue-green algae. Stromatolites are some of the earliest known lifeforms on the planet.
