NASA's Mars InSight lander moving its robotic arm closer to its heat probe called the 'mole'. The InSight team attempted to push the arm on top of the mole and bury it in the Martian soil. The heat probe was designed to burrow into the Martian soil and measure the internal temperature. However, the consistency of the soil meant that the mole was unable to dig three metres deep. This was the distance the mole needed in order to measure the heat flowing from the planet. The InSight lander is designed to study the interior of Mars. It will investigate the processes that formed and shaped Mars and its findings will improve our understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets.
