Jupiter, first SOFIA image. Composite infrared image (right) of Jupiter from SOFIA's 'first light' flight, which took place on 26 May 2010. The image was obtained by the FORCAST camera at wavelengths of 5.4 (blue), 24 (green) and 37 (red) microns. A visible-light image is at left for comparison. The white line in the infrared image is a thin area of clouds through which Jupiter's warm interior can be seen. SOFIA (the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) is flown in an aircraft to the stratosphere to take observations. It was jointly developed from 1996 by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
