New Zealand mountaineers and explorers Harry Ayres (1912-1987, left) and Edmund Hillary (1919-2008, right) near the Tasman glacier, New Zealand, during training for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE). Hillary lead the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team for the CTAE. In 1958 the CTAE became the first expedition to successfully complete an overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South Pole. Ayres was chief ranger at the Mount Cook National Park Board, New Zealand, and a mentor to Hillary. Photographed in October 1955.
