16th century illustration of Pieter Bruegel The Elder's 'The Witch of Malleghem' showing a witch and her assistants cutting stones of madness out of the heads of three victims. The removal of the stones was thought to be a cure for madness. In the 15th and 16th century art, this operation was used to demonstrate the gullibility of people. 1559 print published by Pieter van der Heyden.
