17th century illustration of Scottish translator, cartographer, poet and printer pointing to a print of a man in his hand. John Ogilby (1600-1676), Scottish translator and cartographer. Ogilby's early career was as lord deputy and tutor in Ireland for the Earl of Strafford. His translation work started when he learnt Latin at Cambridge following his return to England from Ireland after the Civil War. However, Ogilby is best known for what is considered one of the first British road atlases, published as Britannia Atlas in 1675. Artwork by Paul van Somer II dating from 1659 to 1704.
