Adrenal cortex carcinoma, light micrograph. Adrenocortical carcinoma is an aggressive but rare cancer originating in the cortex (steroid hormone-producing tissue) of the adrenal gland. The tumour displays sheets of atypical cells with some resemblance to the cells of the normal adrenal cortex, with large areas of haemorrhage and necrosis.
