Originally, Silchester served as the capital of the Iron Age Atrebates tribe, from the late 1st century BCE. After the Roman conquest of 43 CE, it became a large walled town in the Roman province of Britannia, at a major crossroads in the Roman roads of Britain. It was never reoccupied or built over after it was abandoned in the 6th or 7th century. Today, it is considered the best-preserved Roman wall in Great Britain and the remains of what may be one of the oldest Christian churches.
