Wroxeter Roman City, also known as Viroconium Cornoviorum, was once the fourth-largest city in Roman Britain. It was founded as a Roman town around the late 1st century CE during the Roman conquest of Britain. A fortress was constructed on a strategic crossing point on the River Severn around 47 CE. Later, it became a civilian settlement from about 90 CE and prospered for 400 years. It served as an important urban centre in the province of Britannia with a population estimated to be around 5,000 to 6,000 inhabitants at its peak.
