Rainbow formation. Animation showing how light is refracted in rain droplets to produce a rainbow. White light is a superposition of all colours (wavelengths) of the visible spectrum. Each wavelength has a different index of refraction in water. The start of the animation shows a drop of water with light entering at different angles. As the angle increases, more diffraction occurs, producing a spectrum of light. The light producing a rainbow is refracted twice, once on entering and once on leaving. In between, it is reflected from the back of the raindrop. The second part of the animation shows how the superposition of white light diffracted by many droplets forms a rainbow. The animation ends with an eye viewing the colours of the rainbow (arrows show red, yellow, green, blue).
