Evidence of water in Hidden Valley, Mars. Footage zooming out from terrain at the 'Hidden Valley' site in Gale crater on Mars, imaged by NASA's Curiosity rover. Various examples of sedimentary mudstone strata can been seen amongst the rocks here. These provide evidence for the existence of ancient fast-moving streams, and places where streams emptied out into lakes. Water and sedimentation appear to have played an important role in the formation of the floor of Gale crater and Mount Sharp, the mountain in the middle of the crater. The Curiosity rover is part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. It landed on Mars on 6 August 2012, on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. The data for this image is from 29 July 2014.
