Overwintering monarch butterflies Danaus plexippus gather on eucalyptus branches in Pismo Beach, California. Monarchs from as far away as Canada fly hundreds of miles to overwinter in the same groves year after year. Some groves in California and Mexico attract more than 100,000 monarchs in some years.
