Close up of the large ciliate, Stentor, anchored to pond debris, as it sways back and forth while feeding. Beating cilia that line Stentor磗 mouth are used to draw in bacteria and other food. Apparently disturbed, Stentor quickly contracts and disappears. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination with a horizontal field of view of approximately 300 microns.
