The Milky Way is the band of light in the night sky formed by the light of distant stars in our galaxy. At the start of the clip the Large Magellanic Cloud is visible at lower right. The LMC is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, and lies around 160,000 light years from Earth. At lower left at the start of the clip, rising to centre, is the Coalsack dark nebula, seen as a dark patch against the bright Milky Way in that region.
