Timelapse film made from 16 years of exposures of the stars orbiting the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. Observations of the orbit of one star, S2, have provided the best evidence that our galaxy contains a central supermassive black hole, called Sagittarius A*. S2 has been observed for one complete orbit, just over 15.5 years, since 1995. The speed of the orbit around the central body allows the mass of the body to be determined, and it was found to be around four million times the mass of the Sun. Its size was calculated from the size of S2磗 orbit, and the only object that can pack that much mass into that volume is a black hole.
