Aurora around Saturn磗 south pole. Collisions with charged particles in the solar wind cause gas atoms and molecules to emit light. Aurorae typically occur around the poles as charged particles are directed there by planets?magnetic fields. Imaged in ultraviolet light by the Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, on 8th January 2004.
