PAN, LA, interior. This is the oldest surviving part of the royal palaces, but it has undergone substantial alterations. In the Golden Chamber the original ceiling, fastened onto a hipped roof arris framework, was restored during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, who included Gothic motifs and copious gilt_work in the decoration, hence the name of the chamber. Alhambra was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
