Animation of a Higgs boson event in the Compact Muon Solenoid CMS detector in the Large Hadron Collider LHC at CERN. This animation shows a photon_photon event 8 TeV data, seen in 2011, in which a Higgs boson is produced, then rapidly decays to two high_energy photons thick yellow spikes. Detection of the photons and measurement of their directions and energies as being consistent with the Higgs boson provides strong evidence that a Higgs was indeed produced. On 4th July 2012, researchers at the LHC announced that they had discovered a new particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson.
