Timelapse satellite footage of Hurricane Sandy, as it approaches the east coast of the USA, on 29th October 2012. Sandy had already left a trail of destruction through the Caribbean over the previous few days. It hit Jamaica as a category one hurricane and Cuba as a category two. Although it had weakened by this stage, it was still an enormous and powerful storm, the largest on record in the North Atlantic. Sandy made landfall in New Jersey at 20:00 local time on 29th October. A state of emergency was announced in New Jersey and five other states, including New York. The storm surge flooded many coastal regions, including lower Manhattan Island. More than 50 people are known to have died in the storm, and caused an estimated $50 billion of damage. This is NOAA GOES_14 satellite footage, which captures infrared and visible data every minute and relays the information to forecasters on the ground.
