View from beneath the water's surface of stalactites in Chandalier Cave, in Ngarol Island, Palau. This submerged cave system was formed when sea levels were much lower than they are today. Rainwater percolating through the limestone rock of the caves created numerous stalactices and stalagmites. When sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age, the entrance to the cave was submerged, leaving four main chambers containing air pockets where stalactites descend from the ceiling. This is in the third chamber.
