Coloured timelapse microscope footage of the movement of organelles within a plant cell. Organelles are small self-contained units within a cell that perform a specific function, such as manufacturing proteins. They are seen here as small bodies moving along thin microtubules, which are part of the cell's cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton is a network of protein fibres that provides structural support to the cell, and supplies paths along which organelles can be moved to where they are needed. In plant cells, microtubules are linked to the membrane surrounding the cell's nucleus (centre left). This is a hair cell from the stamen of a Tradescantia plant. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination.
